How to Obtain a Permit
The Harris County Fire Marshal does not create or issue building permits. To obtain a permit please:
Request a Final Inspection
|
Step 1: Prepare for the inspection by having all elements of the building
completed and ready for occupancy.
- The Fire Marshals inspection will require that you have "temporary permanent" power.
(Meter set and full power for a limited amount of time.)
- Once the inspection is complete and the structure is approved for occupancy, the
Harris County Permits office will release permanent power to the structure.
Step 2: Have the approved set of plans (as builts)
available for the inspector to review during the inspection.
Step 3: When the project is complete and ready for inspection
have your permit number available for the following:
- Commercial Fire Code (CFC Level 1-9 or CFC Level X 1-9)
- Fill out a request for final inspection.
- This form must be signed and sealed by a licensed professional (Architect, Engineer,
ICC-CBO).
- Fax this form back to 281-436-8005.
- CEFC (Commercial Express Fire code)
- Fire Protection Request for Final Inspection
- You are required to have copies of the following documents on site:
- For fire alarm systems: Completed Fire Alarm Installation Certificate FML-009
- For sprinkler systems: Completed Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground
Piping SF042
- For fixed extinguisher systems: Completed Fire Extinguisher System Installation Certificate
FML-010
- Fill out a
fire protection system request for final inspection.
Step 4: The Permits Department will need to verify there are no other outstanding permits at this location.
Step 5: Once the permits department clears the request, an inspector will schedule an inspection.

Questions and Concerns
Harris County Code Word
The Harris County building official and the Harris County Fire Marshal's
Office worked together to develop a list of codeword interpretations. The
purpose of these interpretations are to explain sections of the fire code that may
otherwise be unclear. To view these interpretations, please view the
Harris County Codeword page. If you have found something in the fire
code that you believe needs further explanation, please click here to
suggest a codeword interpretation. Be sure to include the specific
fire code reference for which you need an interpretation.
