DETENTION OFFICER

DEPARTMENT:            Sheriff’s Office

HOURS:                       40 Hours per Week / Various Shifts

SALARY:                     $14.99 per Hour  / Based on 26 Pay Periods

EDUCATION:  High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required.

JOB SKILLS:  A valid driver's license is required. Candidate must be 18 years of age. Military Veterans must have an Honorable Discharge.

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Reports to and receives assignments, instructions, and direction from Sergeants, Lieutenants, and Captains.  Reads pass-on logs and receives activity briefing from off- going shift personnel.  Observes and monitors jail inmates, detects and deters improper or unacceptable behavior.  Controls and directs inmates while out of cell areas during transfers, work assignments, meals, recreation, etc.  Books inmates into jail, performs searches of individuals and jail cells to locate weapons or contraband.  Prepares logs, records, and reports of jail activities.  Performs other duties and activities as directed. 

OTHER: Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20; hearing must be in normal range; must pass a Psychological Evaluation; must complete all phases of required testing; must have good credit; will be given a Polygraph Examination; no tattoos may be visible from the neck and above, or beyond the wrist to the fingertips while wearing the designated uniform.

PHYSICAL: Lifts 40 lbs. (Scott air pack on back); climbs stairs, stands for extended period of time; bends, stoops, and kneels; operates computer, adjusts knobs and switches; fingerprints individuals and need eye, hand, arm coordination.
